College Admissions Questions from Parents, Part Three

College and grad school application season can be stressful not only for students, but also for their parents who just want the absolute best for them.

So let me answer another question from a parent!

How do I find a balance between a colloquial and sophisticated style of writing?

Some things are simple, like not using contractions (they are too casual for academic writing), and making sure all the grammar is correct. The rest of it comes down to what sounds genuine. There should be a few “big words” peppered in there, but if the student is actively *trying* to sound sophisticated, or produce work that is “writerly”, then their own genuine voice won’t come through. A general rule of thumb would be to write as if the audience is a trusted adult the student knows.
